BASIC FUNCTION

Primary Responsibility: The Technical Writer is responsible for producing informative and instructional content for end-users of Milner Technologies software products. Content is generated as PDF user guides and HTML/CSS web-based Help.

 

WORK PERFORMED

 DUTY/% TIME

Collaborate with software development team and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to gather information about software product features.

20%

Develop technical content informing and instructing end-users on using software products.

40%

Publish documentation in PDF and HTML/XML formats and insert content into software builds and Web-help servers.

10%

Manage all aspects of help documentation content database, including version control.

5%

Edit and update existing help documentation in deadline with Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).

5%

Attend relevant product and training meetings, and update relevant departments on documentation development schedule and deadline completion.

5%

Produce client specific documentation and/or specialized content on demand.

5%

Test and evaluate new software products and features then provide feedback.

5%

Consistently improve the documentation development process.

5%

Work independently and responsibly.

Perform other duties as required.           


EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  •  Bachelorís degree (or equivalent in demonstrable work experience)
  • 4+ years of Professional Technical Writing experience

 

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

 Required Skills:

  • Strong command of the written English language: clear and concise writing.
  • Intuitive content formatting and structuring for PDF and HTML based documentation.
  • Ability to self-manage deadlines and prioritize projects according to the Development teamís release schedule.
  • Manage communication with SMEs to gather information on new and existing product features.
  • Knowledge of single-source documentation publishing strategies (i.e., pushing content to network sources in a variety of formats).
  • Proficiency with the following software:
    • Adobe Technical Communication Suite 5+ (FrameMaker 12 [or newer]; RoboHelp HTML 11 [or newer]; Captivate [or newer], Adobe Pro/DC)
    • Adobe Photoshop (any) or another graphic and vector editing software
    • Microsoft Office Suite (Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel)
    • Microsoft Visual Studio
    • Screen capture software
  • Basic knowledge of HTML, XML, XSLT, and CSS.
  • Basic knowledge of Windows and Windows Server OS.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with frequent interruptions, occasionally in urgent situations.
  • Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.

 

Preferred Skills:

  • Proficiency with DITA documentation development strategies
  • Knowledge of the following software:
    • Camtasia or other video editing software
    • Microsoft SQL Server
    • Oxygen XML (DITA)
    • Notepad++ or similar code editing software

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  •  Work in areas which require attention to detail in a varied environment.
  • General office environment. May spend long hours sitting or standing.
  • Some physical effort is required which may involve bending, reaching, stretching, or similar activities as well as lifting or moving items weighing up to 60 pounds
